The Rector of the University of Kinshasa, Professor Jean-Marie KAYEMBE, received a delegation from the Government of the People’s Republic of China, led by a senior official from the Chinese Ministry of Health. This marks the third Chinese medical mission to support the Democratic Republic of the Congo in its response to the Ebola virus disease outbreak.
Led by Mr. YANG Xiaochen, the delegation included representatives from the China CDC, the General Administration of Customs of China, and Zhejiang University. On the Congolese side, Professor Didier BOMPANGUE, Deputy Director of the Institute of One Health for Africa (INOHA), attended the meeting.
Discussions focused on strengthening scientific cooperation on infectious diseases in general, with particular emphasis on One Health approaches.
The Rector highlighted existing partnerships between UNIKIN and Chinese universities, the presence of a Confucius Institute at the University of Kinshasa, and the Mulan scholarship programme made available to the University of Kinshasa by the Chinese Embassy.
Through its representative from Zhejiang University, the Chinese delegation expressed interest in immediately initiating scientific collaboration with the Institute of One Health for Africa (INOHA), particularly in the areas of training and research on infectious diseases.
Both parties agreed to continue discussions towards the finalization and signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, based on a draft agreement that will be reviewed by both sides in the coming weeks. The Rector’s upcoming visit to China could provide an opportunity to initial the agreement, marking the starting point of a mutually beneficial collaboration.
